DEMOCRACY DAY ADDRESS BY BOLANLE AMINAT SARUMI (BASA)
June 12, 2025
My dear people of Oyo State, fellow Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, and most especially the resilient youth and women of our great nation,
Today, we gather once again to mark Democracy Day, a day of reflection, remembrance, and responsibility. As we honor the heroes of our democratic journey, we must also ask ourselves: what legacy are we leaving behind? What kind of Nigeria are we building?

On June 12, 2018, I, Bolanle Aminat Sarumi, known to many of you politically as BASA, stood boldly at the University of Ibadan and publicly declared my intention to run for Governor of Oyo State. I did not make that decision lightly. I made it because of the pain, the neglect, and the cries I saw and heard from every corner of our beloved state. Those reasons remain valid today—they have not been lost, they will not be forgotten, and they must never be ignored.
I was born in Oyo State. I was raised here. I went to primary and secondary school here. I know this land. I know our people. I know the places where governance has never reached. I know communities where basic policies have never been implemented. And every day that I see suffering that could have been avoided, I am reminded why I cannot give up this dream.
Just yesterday, a 26year-old student of The Polytechnic Ibadan Sotubo Tobilola Ayomide an HND 2 Mechanical engineer student lost his life—hit by a truck while on a bike, heading to the nearest charging station, simply to get light on his phone. This happened in Ido, an area that has suffered over five years of darkness — no electricity, no proper infrastructure.
How do our leaders sleep at night?
How do Governors sleep at night knowing:
A mother dies during childbirth because the hospital generator had no fuel, and light went out mid-surgery?
Our schools have no chairs, no roofs, no teachers, and no salaries paid for months?
Our youths are unemployed years after graduation, despite their parents spending millions to educate them?
So when you ask me, “BASA, why haven’t you given up?”
I ask you, “How can I give up?”
I cannot, and I will not, because it was never about me. From 2018 till today, this has been about you.
It’s about the young mother selling at Bodija Market, the bricklayer in Oke-Ogun, the girl child in Ogbomoso who deserves to go to school, and the graduate in Ibadan North who just wants a job.
So today, on this Democracy Day, I make two announcements:
First, I hereby resign as a stakeholder and leader in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). This decision is personal, strategic, and necessary. The full details will be found in my formal resignation letter, but know this: I’m not stepping back—I’m stepping forward. Not for party, but for purpose.
Second, I officially reaffirm my dream and mission to become the Governor of Oyo State in 2027. Not because of ambition, but because of vision. A vision to rescue, to rebuild, and to restore dignity to our people.
To make this dream a reality, I have founded a people-powered movement:
Nigerian Youths and Women Rescue Mission.
If you believe in a better Nigeria, if you will not sell your vote, if you still believe in the dream that our country can rise—then join me*

And God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
I remain your daughter, your advocate, your BASA.
