The Nigerian football community is in mourning following the death of one of its most iconic sports figures, Peter Rufai, who passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at the age of 61 after a prolonged illness.

Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s greatest goalkeepers, Rufai was affectionately known as “Dodo Mayana.” Renowned for his leadership, agility, and composure under pressure, he was a key figure in Nigeria’s golden generation of football, earning 65 international caps with the Super Eagles.

Rufai played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s historic 1994 Africa Cup of Nations triumph and proudly represented the country at the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups. His presence in goal was defined by calm assurance, quick reflexes, and a commanding voice that anchored the team’s defense through a series of memorable campaigns.

Beyond his exploits on the pitch, Rufai was a mentor, coach, and passionate advocate for the development of young goalkeepers in Nigeria. After retiring from international football, he continued to contribute to the game through training academies and youth outreach.

In a tribute statement, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) described Rufai as “a national hero whose legacy between the posts will remain etched in our football history.”

Details about funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
