Historic Day in Ibadan: Omo Aj’Orosun Club Celebrates Coronation of Oba Rashidi Ladoja as 44th Olubadan

The ancient city of Ibadan stood still on Friday, September 26, 2025, as history unfolded with the coronation of His Imperial Majesty, His Excellency Oba Senator Rashidi Adewolu Akanmu Ladoja, ARUSA I, CFR, FNSE, as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.

It was a day of splendour, tradition, and destiny fulfilled. From Mapo Hall to the palace grounds, thousands of well-wishers, cultural custodians, politicians, and ordinary citizens gathered to witness the historic installation of a man whose life has been an extraordinary blend of modernity and tradition.

FROM GAMBARI TO GREATNESS

Born in 1944 in the Gambari area of Ibadan, Oba Ladoja’s story reflects the resilience of the city itself. Educated at Ibadan Boys’ High School and later abroad at the University of Liège, Belgium, where he obtained a degree in Chemical Engineering, he distinguished himself early as a man of intellect and determination.

His career path took him through the corporate world and into politics. He served briefly as a Senator of the Federal Republic in 1993 before being elected Governor of Oyo State in 2003, a position he held until 2007. Despite political turbulence, including an impeachment and eventual reinstatement, Oba Ladoja’s legacy remains one of courage, perseverance, and a relentless commitment to public service.

IBADAN’S UNIQUE SUCCESSION TRADITION

The Olubadan stool is unlike any other in Yorubaland. Kingship in Ibadan is not inherited by royal lineage but earned through patience and seniority across two traditional lines: the Otun (civil) and Balogun (military). Oba Ladoja’s rise through the Otun line over decades, culminating as Otun Olubadan, positioned him as the rightful successor following the passing of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan, in July 2025.

For many, his ascension is destiny made manifest: born in 1944, now the 44th Olubadan.

CORONATION OF DESTINY

The coronation ceremony was marked by royal pageantry, cultural displays, and heartfelt tributes. Traditional chiefs, government dignitaries, religious leaders, and members of the international community joined indigenes of Ibadan in celebrating the historic enthronement.

The new monarch, respected as a political statesman, accomplished engineer, and business magnate, now takes on his most sacred role as custodian of Ibadan’s heritage and symbol of unity for its people.

OMO AJ’OROSUN CLUB’S TRIBUTE

Among the many voices celebrating the coronation, Omo Aj’Orosun Club, Ibadan, the city’s foremost socio-cultural club, holds a special pride. As an esteemed member of the club, Oba Ladoja’s elevation to the throne resonates deeply within its ranks.

In a congratulatory message signed by Esv. Toyeshe Lawal, Club P.R.O., for Engr. Sunday Gbenjo, Club President, the Club described the coronation as “a divine alignment of history and destiny,” expressing confidence that the reign of Oba Ladoja will usher in peace, unity, and prosperity for Ibadanland.

“We celebrate with joy and prayers for His Imperial Majesty’s health, wisdom, and a long, prosperous reign. May Ibadan continue to flourish under his guidance,” the statement read.

A REIGN OF PROMISE

For Ibadan, the coronation of Oba Ladoja is more than the installation of a king. It is the beginning of a new chapter in the city’s history, one that blends the strength of tradition with the demands of modern leadership.

As drums fade and celebrations continue, the people of Ibadan look forward to a reign of stability, progress, and enduring legacy under the 44th Olubadan.

Long live the Olubadan of Ibadanland. Long live Ibadan.
